My name is Tatyana S. I want to share the story of my son Artem and how he underwent bariatric treatment.
Since childhood, our son started gaining weight, but back then it wasn’t very noticeable and seemed like just cute childhood chubbiness. However, over the years, it turned into excess weight. The problem became especially pronounced during his teenage years. He began to feel self-conscious, was shy about his body, and didn’t like being photographed. Unfortunately, school was also difficult — some classmates regularly teased him and said hurtful things. He coped with these feelings by eating sweets and quick snacks, which led to a significant weight gain.
We tried different approaches. We consulted endocrinologists and dietitians, tried special nutrition programs, and did sports, but there were no significant or lasting results. Artem was very upset that all his efforts were in vain, he lost motivation, and sank deeper into his complexes. As a mother, I saw how hard it was for him, and my heart ached from helplessness.
Now Artem is 20 years old. He is studying at university and making plans for the future. All his life he dreamed of one thing — to be slim and healthy. We discussed many options with him. One day, we were offered the option of bariatric surgery. We went through a series of examinations and tests. It was not easy to make this decision, but Artem was ready. I was very worried myself. And a year ago, he underwent bariatric surgery.
The doctors thoroughly explained what changes to expect after the procedure, emphasizing that success would depend on Artem’s personal desire and willingness to work on himself.
The first days after surgery were difficult. He had to learn how to eat again: small portions, a strict schedule, constant control. Artem often said, “Mom, I don’t believe I can get used to this.” But with each week, he noticed changes — the pounds were dropping, breathing became easier, and he gained energy.
After a few months, he transformed — not only physically, but also internally. Artem began to smile more, communicate with more confidence, and even started doing sports. Most importantly, he returned to the life he always wanted to live.
Now I see a happy, determined young man and am grateful to the doctors for their professionalism. Of course, bariatric surgery is not an easy path, but for our family, it became a chance for a new story of health and confidence in the future.
After the surgery, a new stage began in Artem’s life. The first weeks were challenging. He had to follow a strict diet, eat small portions, and constantly limit himself. Artem complained that he couldn’t get used to it. It was very difficult for him to adjust. We supported him as a family.
Gradually, his weight began to decrease. Artem noticed lightness in his body. Breathing became easier, shortness of breath disappeared, and he felt more agile. For the first time, I saw a real spark in his eyes. He believed in the results. His dream had come true. He took control of himself and realized that everything would continue to improve.
Several months passed. The changes were impressive. It wasn’t easy, especially at first. Sometimes Artem experienced dumping syndrome if he slightly violated the diet. His pulse would quicken, and he felt weak. Fortunately, it was mild and passed relatively quickly. Eventually, he adapted and became more careful with his diet.
During this time, Artem didn’t just lose weight — he literally became a different person. He is now more confident, actively socializes, and even made new friends. At university, it’s easier for him to connect with classmates. If he previously preferred to stay invisible, now he fills that gap and enjoys being noticed. He started playing sports and talking about plans for his life that he had kept to himself before.
For me, as a mother, it’s pure happiness to see my child returning to the life he always wanted. Yes, the path was difficult, and there is still a lot of work ahead to maintain the results for many years. It is important to understand that bariatric surgery is only a tool, not a miracle. It is necessary to maintain oneself in this new form. The most important thing for me is that our son believed in himself and got a chance at a future without the burden of excess weight and complexes.
I am immensely grateful to the doctors and the entire team who supported us along this journey. If any parents are facing the same choice, I want to say: bariatric treatment can truly help and become a turning point. However, it’s crucial to approach this decision consciously and thoughtfully. Be sure to consult a specialist and support your child wholeheartedly during and after the treatment.
