In my practice as a bariatric surgeon, I encounter patients daily who are looking not only for a way to lose weight but also for a reliable and safe solution to their problem. When surgery is mentioned, it's natural for many questions and concerns to arise. That's why I want to talk about a technology that has fundamentally changed the approach to weight-loss surgeries, making them more precise and safer. I'm talking about robotic surgery using the Da Vinci system.

The Evolution of Surgery: From Open Operations to Robots

Think back to how complex surgeries were performed in the past: a large incision, a long recovery, and a high risk of complications. Then came laparoscopy, or as patients call it, “keyhole surgery.” That was a huge step forward. But even with laparoscopy, the surgeon is limited in movement and space, and the image on the monitor remains two-dimensional.

The Da Vinci system is the next major leap in the evolution of surgery. It doesn't replace the surgeon; it becomes their high-tech extension. The robot allows me to perform the most complex maneuvers with a level of precision that is unattainable for the human hand.

How the System Works

When I operate, I am seated at a special console in the same operating room. I see a three-dimensional, magnified view of the surgical area, which allows me to examine every anatomical detail. My hands control special masters that translate my movements to the robot's tiny instruments.

Imagine that the movements of my wrists and fingers are transferred to miniature instruments inside the patient's body. These instruments can rotate 360 degrees and mimic all the motions of a human hand, but with much greater precision and without any tremor.

Advantages of Robotic Bariatric Surgery: Precision, Safety, and Comfort

Using Da Vinci gives me, as a surgeon, a range of advantages that directly impact the results of the operation and the patient's comfort.

1.Unmatched Precision.

The 3D visualization and magnified view allow me to see every blood vessel and nerve ending. This is critically important, especially when performing complex anastomoses (connections) during gastric bypass surgery. I can place sutures with millimeter accuracy, which significantly reduces the risk of bleeding and complications.

2.Minimal Trauma.

With Da Vinci, I use micro-instruments that require even smaller incisions than with traditional laparoscopy. This means less tissue trauma, minimal pain, and, consequently, a faster recovery.

3.Reduced Risk of Complications.

According to research, robotic bariatric surgery reduces the risk of postoperative complications, such as leaks at the suture lines, compared to traditional laparoscopy. This is due to the enhanced precision of suture placement and less tissue trauma.

4.Shorter Hospital Stay.

Thanks to minimal invasiveness and a quicker recovery, patients who undergo robotic surgery spend less time in the hospital and can return to their normal lives sooner.

5.Fewer Scars.

The small punctures needed to access the instruments make the post-operative scars almost unnoticeable, which is an important aesthetic consideration for many patients.

Scientific Evidence: What Do Global Experts Say?

The global medical community is actively studying the benefits of robotic surgery. According to data from English-language sources, particularly publications in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases, the robotic approach shows excellent results. For example, studies indicate that for complex procedures like revision bariatric surgery or gastrojejunostomy, the use of the robot reduces the rate of complications.

Robotic systems also provide greater ergonomics for the surgeon, allowing them to perform long and complex operations without fatigue, which also positively impacts patient safety.

Technology in Service of Health

In my work, I am convinced that using advanced technology is not just a trend but a responsibility to the patient. Da Vinci robotic surgery not only makes operations safer and more precise but also opens new horizons in the treatment of obesity and its related diseases. This is the future that has already arrived, and I am proud to offer my patients the most modern and effective solutions.
